Listing of The Top 10 Australian Technology Blogs

February 19, 2020 by Sheldon Leave a Comment

Today I was looking to put together a listing of the Top Ten technology websites in Australia, but I ended up researching much more than I should and so got more than 10 for you. I went surfing ( the internet off course) and top websites that know what ranks in Australia like Alexa.com , Googletrends.com, and similarweb.com and a few others

Data from – Best Tech Ranking Websites 2017 to 2020

There was an interesting mix on top go to websites by Australians – I was surprised at finding vic.gov.au the government website ranking at #43 on alexa, not so surprised at livejasmin.com #35 and pornhub.com #24 rankings. I really don’t know how diply.com was on that top list.

How alexa.com ranks websites

Alexa ranks websites based on a combined measure of page views and unique site users, and creates a list of most popular websites based on this ranking time-averaged over three-month periods. Only the site’s highest-level domain is recorded, aggregating any subdomains.

Here is what similarweb found for the top news and media websites in Australia.

ratings

Similarweb collects data like which website gets how much traffic from which country comes to a website and more similar data, so they got a pulse and where people are going on the internet.

What similar webs gave me on technology niche

Well similarweb did not have a technology category, so I browsed computers and electronics and got office.com, apple.com and xero.com – so I browsed onto their other category internet and telecom and got facebook.com and google.com.au with top ranks.

Not satisfied I surfed onto Arts and entertainment category and got websites like “Netflix.com” “youtube.com” and imdb.com as top ranking websites in Australia.

I, just did not rely on google.com , but also looked into popularity on Facebook.com where people spend a lot of time browsing content nowadays and has its own popularity ranking within the facebook world.

You’d be surprised to know – Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has overtaken Shakira to become the most followed person on Facebook according to BBC. The 30-year-old star now has 107,096,356 likes compared to 107,087,100 for the Colombian singer.

Some top tech pages on facebook

  • Samsung Mobile
  • Apple Music

There is not much information on top ranking Facebook pages in technology, but if we look at news and media in Australia , these websites (sbs, abc and 7news) are definitely doing well with a large fanbase on facebook. Nine.com.au and yahoo7 is also doing well with their fanbases on facebook.

roy morgan ratings stats

According to roymorgan.com.au – Three million Australians (14+) visited one or more of these Top 10 tech-focused websites in an average four weeks in the year to March 2016—up 34% since the year to March 2013.

So I collected all the information from these top ranking categories from these different websites and came up with these top ranking technology websites and came up with my own little refined algorithm for “Top Tech Websites in Australia for 2017” and here it is listed below.

The data is collected from these freely available top data collecting websites (alexa, similarweb etc) , including social media platforms facebook.com and more and web search engines including bing.com and yahoo.com apart from google.com.au.

Tips For Managing Your Business’s Scrap Metal Disposal Needs

May 13, 2019 by Reporter Leave a Comment

bin and waste disposal

If you are running a business that produces waste scrap metals, then you understand that disposing of the waste is quite a challenge. Poorly disposed metal scraps pose a danger to both human health and the environment; this is why there is a need to properly dispose of the waste metal scraps. To effectively manage the waste scrap metals, you need to train your workers on the safety measures to take during the waste scrap metal collection process. They need to understand that no waste metals should be left lying about as this could cause physical injuries. Instead, they should collect all the waste scrap metals and put them in one place for disposal.

The disposal process should be done by professionals who will pick up the waste scrap metals and safely dispose of it. Besides the environmental benefits of managing waste scrap metals, there are some economic benefits to be gained too. The scrap waste can serve as a raw material when properly recycled.

Managing Scrap Metal Disposal

Provide Storage Bins

One way of preventing the inappropriate disposal of scrap metals is to ensure that there are enough storage bins at every point in your business. Putting up bins at designated areas within the business encourages the employees to properly dispose of any metal scraps that they might not need. If your business needs on-site collection bins for metal scrap, make sure you choose the best service in your area.

Provide Adequate Protective Gear

Personal protective gear is important during scrap metal collection. Workers who are moving the waste metals to the collection point may need to have protective gear that will prevent sharp edges of the scrap metals from hurting them. Some of the common protective clothing that should be provided includes thick gloves, safety boots and heavy material aprons that cannot easily be torn by metal.

Erect Adequate Signage

Ensure that there are adequate signs that direct employees and other visitors in your business premise on the right place to dispose of any scrap metal they might be having. You might consider using bright colours, engaging imagery and flashy signs in directing the workers towards the proper point of disposal.

Engage Services of Scrap Recyclers

Recycling is the best manner of getting rid of waste scrap metals on your business premises. Recycling is more beneficial even to the environment because the re-use of a scrap metal prevents any form of environmental hazard that arises from carelessly disposed of scrap metals. When selecting the scrap recyclers, ensure that you chose the best in the market based on factors such as the facilities they have, the reliability and professionalism, and the concern of recyclers to the environment.

Partnering with a Scrap Yard

Partnering with a scrap yard can also aid in managing the scrap metal in your business. You can get into a contract of supplying the scrap yards within your region with the scrap metals that they need to conduct their business. Such a partnership can fetch you some money. Scrap yards use the waste scrap metals as a raw material to create metal items. The partnership with scrap yards will not only get you cash for scrap, but you will also be taking care of the environment; through the management of waste scrap metals.

Educate your Employees

Training your employees can be a means of sensitizing them of the importance of proper metal scrap disposal. You can engage your employees in seminars that may equip them with the knowledge necessary for proper disposal of metal scrap.

Outsourcing your day Job

March 30, 2018 by Reporter Leave a Comment

Learn to outsource your job and make more time for this

Credit : Flickr Relaxing in Maldives by nattu is licensed under CC BY 2.0

The outsourcing revolution

Entrepreneurs regularly outsource to save time, access specialised expertise and get work done. In the last decade as access to the internet and data-speeds have improved, particularly in developing countries, an entirely new freelance workforce has emerged online.

Many skilled freelancers are based in lower-cost countries such as the Philippines, India or Pakistan, and can be hired for significantly less than local talent. Fuelled-by, or perhaps fuelling this phenomenon, freelancer marketplaces have exploded in popularity, stimulating a rush of new talent into the global marketplace.

These trends now make it possible for employees to outsource aspects of their jobs to relieve stress and win back time for things they’d rather be doing.

Where to find freelance talent

Virtual marketplaces such as Fiverr.com, UpWork.com and others provide online platforms where freelancers can advertise their services plus examples of their work, their rates and related information. Buyers can search for freelancers by a range of categories or keywords, save profiles of promising contractors and then interact with them by messaging service.

Buyers can post jobs and invite applications from qualified freelancers and when a job is agreed by both parties, these platforms even manage the contract, billing, payment and receipt aspects of the relationship. All of these features make it easy to find, engage, manage and pay for freelance talent, not just for business owners, but for employees themselves.

You can access freelancers like this graphic designer using marketplaces such as UpWork.com

Source: Flickr – Credit : Design freelancer working b2b business by thods is licensed under CC BY 2.0

What kind of talent is available?

If you’re thinking freelancing is only good for building a mobile app or procuring some cheap copywriting, then you might be surprised and the sheer range of talent available.

UpWork.com, which describes itself as ‘the world’s leading freelancing website’ claims that “annually, freelancers are earning more than $1 billion via the site each year and providing companies with over 3,500 skills.”

Need an academic paper written? What about a bookkeeper? Perhaps you need an interior design for a new rental property you’re considering buying? Or how about a webpage translated into Chinese? All these are available, and more, often at very low prices.

Can I outsource my job to freelancers?

If you are an employee looking to outsource aspects of your role, the nature of the work you do will determine what aspects can and cannot be outsourced. Most jobs have a range of common elements that may be outsourced cheaply and effectively.

Outsourcing your general administration can save you hours of unproductive time. Managing emails, scheduling meetings, formatting documents, preparing Powerpoint presentations, filing, managing your digital documents and countless other time-consuming yet necessary tasks can be outsourced effectively to a virtual administrative assistant.

What does it cost?

For as little as $200 per week, you could employ a full-time administrative assistant. That means that for around $10,000 a year, you could have a full-time person working for you, available by phone or email or instant-messaging application, ready to work at a moment’s notice.

Depending on your personal financial situation, it may also be possible to claim the expense as a tax deduction related to your employment. As a result, the real cost of engaging the freelancer may be far less.

If you’d like to outsource but don’t have the money available, there are plenty of ways to find the cash you’ll need at short notice.

Is it legal?

Your employment agreement and the terms and conditions of your employer may or may not prohibit you from outsourcing work without their express approval. Factors like confidentiality deserve careful consideration. As a rule, don’t go outsourcing your entire job like this person did.

Consider also what other aspects of your life admin you could outsource to free up to time you’d rather be spending on more important things.

Should I tell my boss?

Aside from the ethical and moral issues, there’s a good reason you should consider sharing your plan with your boss. If you can make a convincing business case for it, such as the amount of time you could spend acquiring new clients, then your boss may consider reimbursing you for the expense.

What else should I consider?

Managing freelancers to deliver work is a skill, meaning it takes time to learn and perfect. Start by outsourcing small tasks and practice the act of working with a third-party to get back the results you expect. It can take time to develop an efficient and productive working relationship. Don’t put yourself at risk by outsourcing critical work without having a backup plan in place (which may simply be you doing the work yourself).

Bottom line

Jump online and check out a freelancer marketplace for yourself. Start small and learn how to take advantage of the wonderful world of freelance available to you.

5 Ways the Medical Profession can Save Money and be Better at Business

October 9, 2014 by Reporter Leave a Comment

We are constantly hearing in the media about the woeful state of the NHS and how there is a shortage of doctors, nurses etc. and how the pot is nearly empty. Anyone who works in the medical profession will tell you about the waste that exists within the NHS and they all have their ideas of how money could be saved and be spent where it is most needed. We have considered this carefully and here are our suggestions for 5 ways in which the medical profession can save money.

healthcare doctor

Training

You forget just how many careers exist within the medical profession. Those ‘behind the scenes’ staff who by their very presence keep the profession going. Take porters for example, hospitals would grind to a halt without these trusty stalwarts and they, like all the rest, often have to undergo training. Employing online training rather than sending them off the a classroom for hours on end will not only save money but cause a lot less hassle logistically. To keep the necessary quota in place and paying others overtime to ensure this would save an awful lot of money over the course of a year.

Food

Everyone complains about hospital food and quite frankly who can blame them. Rather than buy in fresh food and cook it many hospitals are now buying in readymade meals which the nursing staff heat up in microwaves on the ward. This is taking the nurses away from their essential duties and what use is a processed meal completely lacking in any kind of vitamins and nutrition to patients recovering from illnesses or surgery?

Too many chiefs

This isn’t a problem restricted to the NHS obviously, but the term too many chiefs and not enough Indians is certainly relevant when referring to the modern medical profession. With modern technology there is no need for so many supervisors and managers. In days gone by there was a matron, the sisters and the nurses, the matron have now been replaced by several managers who sit in offices all day juggling numbers. How can this be cost effective or be in the best interests of the patients? The simple fact is that there are far too many people in the NHS sitting behind desks instead of being involved in actual healthcare. They command bigger wages than those on the front line and invariably get a golden handshake on retiring, unlike those life savers beneath them who have to manage on the pension they have paid into during the time they have spent working for the NHS.

Supplies

There are very few companies who supply medical essential such as gloves and other disposable items so they charge through the nose for it. Why are there over 77 types of different disposable gloves? Surely you only need a few; latex and non-latex etc. All those managers sitting trying to juggle figures would be best off shopping around to save money on these supplies. Every business knows that sticking with the same supplier rather than shopping around costs more and as today’s medical profession is very much a business they should be taking a leaf out of other’s books and doing the same.

Drugs

Apart from the shocking stat that £150m worth of drugs are wasted every year this again boils down to suppliers. As with everything else there are suppliers the NHS use which cost the earth but plenty more who could supply them cheaper if they shopped around. A paracetamol is a paracetamol at the end of the day, so why pay £2 a pack when a supermarket can sell them for less than £1 and still make a profit?

So, as is clear to see there are numerous ways that the medical industry can cut down and saveon costs.

An initial public offering (IPO) or stock market launch is a type of public offering where shares of stock in a company are sold to the general public, on a securities exchange, for the first time. Through this process, a private company transforms into a public company. Initial public offerings are used by companies to raise expansion capital, to possibly monetize the investments of early private investors, and to become publicly traded enterprises.

Reasons for listing as an ipo

When a company lists its securities on a public exchange, the money paid by the investing public for the newly issued shares goes directly to the company (primary offering) as well as to any early private investors who opt to sell all or a portion of their holdings (secondary offering) as part of the larger IPO. An IPO, therefore, allows a company to tap into a wide pool of potential investors to provide itself with capital for future growth, repayment of debt, or working capital

Public offering
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A public offering is the offering of securities of a company or a similar corporation to the public. Generally, the securities are to be listed on a stock exchange. In most jurisdictions, a public offering requires the issuing company to publish a prospectus detailing the terms and rights attached to the offered security, as well as information on the company itself and its finances. Many other regulatory requirements surround any public offering and they vary according to jurisdiction.

Public offering without listing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A public offering without listing, often called a POWL deal or a POWL, is a form of public equity offering by non-Japanese firms in the Japanese market, without the previously required simultaneous listing on a local exchange. Equity offerings via POWL have been a common part of Asia regional public offerings since the early 1990s, with Japanese investors often taking more than 20% of the offering through this format

Are Australian Wineries in trouble ?

August 29, 2011 by Reporter 1 Comment

Sales figures show that wine sales slipped 3.3% in 2010/11 – the first fall in 15 years and
largest drop in annual wine sales for 22 years. Australian consumers have been  spending less on the spirits ad this has affected the Australian wine market.

While the sales of Australian wines  have gone down, French wines have been doing pretty well. French wine only accounts for 1.7% of all wine sales, but the share has doubled in the past five years. Apart from the low domestic demand in Australia  the high Australian dollar and domestic over-supply of grapes have also  affected the wine markets.

Some of the more popular wine growing region s in australia  is the Hunter Valley ( NSW,VIC), Swan valley , Margaret river( WA), Port Phillip and Gippsland ( Greater Victoria)

The wine grape production for the year 2009-10 is estimated by the ABS to be 1.53 million tones, around 9 percent lower than  the 2008-2009 harvest. The wine industry has been  affected by scarce water supplies in some regions and in some parts of south eastern Australia  also by the heat wave. In Victoria many  winegrowers was affected by the floods and outbreaks of  disease due to damp and humid conditions. The Murray darling  Swan hill zone has  been affected by disease  affecting wine production  in early parts of the year.

Red wine grapes have been the farmers popular choice in cultivation of production in 2009-10 with  it accounting for the total of 55%

vineyards wine sales figures 2011 2012

The forecast for   2011 –12 is for the wine  grape production to increase by 10 %  taking into account vines reaching full production, but so far the weather is playing a dampener on  good wine grape production and these results could get affected by any major disruptions in weather.

Cats eating more fish that their owners

January 7, 2011 by Reporter Leave a Comment

“In many cases they are eating better quality fish than their owners”. Leading this fishy business is the US, where more than 1.1 million tonnes of small forage fish, including sardines, herrings and anchovies, go into cat food.

Each cat in Australia eats 13.7 kilograms of fish a year, while humans on average consume about 11 kilograms of fish and seafood each.

“Good fish is being wasted because of some pet owners’ hedonistic needs when feeding their pets.”  GOURMET meals dished up to pampered pets could be threatening world fish supplies, Victorian scientists have warned. 2,48 million tonnes of “forage” fish ie sardines, herrings and anchovies, are being consumed by the world’s cat population via the cat food industry, each year. That means about 13.7 kg per putty cat, purr year. Note, that is, only if you have an Aussie cat, not all global cats are so lucky (or included in the study).

“Australian pet cats are eating better than their owners,” Friggin felines are messing with our fish supplies and denying third world countries. A recent report draws attention to the cat food industry’s use of forage fish, which includes sardines and herrings and is considered a limited biological resource.researchers have discovered that cats eat 2 and a half tons of real fish each year and not only that, it’s the good stuff. In other words cats are eating fish that could be consumed by humans when they could be eating the guts, heads and the rest of the offal.
