UK in broil over supply of chemical to syria

September 11, 2013 by Reporter Leave a Comment

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday that UK companies sold deadly poisonous chemicals to the Bashar al-Assad-led Syrian government that could have been used in the alleged chemical weapons attack in Damascus, killing around 1,400 people.

In the period between July 2004 – May 2010, the British government had issued five licences to two companies that allowed them to sell to Syria sodium fluoride, a chemical used to make the known deadly sarin that can be used in chemical attacks, the ndtv report and UK daily reports said.

Chemicals used in attack -Sarin

Sarin, or GB, is an organophosphorus compound with the formula [(CH3)2CHO]CH3PF. It is a colorless, odorless liquid, used as a chemical weapon owing to its extreme potency as a nerve agent.
‘
Sarin can be lethal even at very low concentrations, with death following within one minute after direct ingestion due to suffocation from lung muscle paralysis, unless some antidotes, typically atropine or Biperiden and pralidoxime, are quickly administered to a person.[4] People who absorb a non-lethal dose, but do not receive immediate medical treatment, may suffer permanent neurological damage.

Other than sarin, VX and Mustard Gas are otehr chemical that have been used in  chemical attacks

Chemical attacks History

The March 16, 1988,(Saddam Gasses The Kurds) attack came during the Iran-Iraq war. Saddam’s cousin Ali Hassan al-Majid, who ordered the attack on Halabja, came to be known as Chemical Ali. He was executed in 2010 following the U.S. invasion of Iraq that toppled Saddam.

Chemical weapons were used sporadically after the war, including by the Soviets againstrebelling peasants; Spain and France against Rif rebels in Spanish Morocco; Britain in Mesopotamia; and Italian Fascists during the invasion of Abyssinia.

Most countries need to have checks , but in a clear breach of international protocol on the trade of dangerous chemicals and substances, the British firms delivered sodium fluoride to a Syrian cosmetics company. It is alleged that Assad’s government uses such sham companies to divert chemicals into its weapons programme in syria as reported by the newspaper.

"Previously we thought that while export licences had been granted, no chemicals were actually delivered. Now we know that in the build-up to the Syrian civil war, British companies – with the backing of our government – were supplying this potentially lethal substance as reported by Docherty.

This has created a flurry of questions in British parliament in relation to their accountability in this chemical attack

Tony Abbott: Australia’s pugnacious new prime minister

He may have run a gaffe-prone campaign against the bookish Kevin Rudd, the incumbent Labor prime minister, but his knockabout style, which harkens back to older, safer times, proved popular with an electorate exhausted by years of Labor infighting.

Australian election sweeps conservative leader Tony Abbott to power

Abbott, a former boxer, Rhodes scholar and trainee priest, promised to restore political stability, cut taxes and crack down on asylum seekers arriving by boat.

Tony Abbott wins, but does Australia care?

Weeks before Saturday’s vote, the Liberal-National (i.e. conservative) coalition Tony Abbott leads commanded such a margin in the polls that the incumbent Labour party overthrew their own prime minister, Julia Gillard, and replaced her with Kevin Rudd, who Labour had overthrown three years previously when his popularity began to wobble.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange missed out on a Senate seat in Victoria, where the final place was claimed by Rick Muir of the Australian Motoring Enthusiasts Party.

Gillard crew Puts media speculation to end

March 21, 2013 by Reporter Leave a Comment

The time line of events leading  from media speculation  created by the media of a split in the labour party  to the proposed caucus vote to choose a new leader and Kevin Rudd refusing to challenge Julia Gillard in a leadership if given below.

"The leadership has been settled in the most conclusive fashion possible," Ms Gillard told a press conference.

leadership battle for media reforms

Major Media Corporations threatened by the new media laws reforms have been publishing on  News channels, Print and Online websites of a  split brewing in the labor party, which is likened to a destabilising of the running government

Time line of events

1. Government announces Media law reforms

1. Medial TV channels repeatedly announce/speculate  of a split brewing in  the labor party

2. Coverage backed up  and escalated by radio news, Online websites and Local tv channels leading to a proposed caucus vote  in labor party.

3. Julia gillard  calls for caucus vote  to put a end to  a challenge if any raised or intended to be raised and puts a end to speculation with no challenge to the leadership .

4. Media agencies report that this is not the end of the issue, even though Kevin Rudd Announces that he will no challenge and support the current leadership into the coming elections

While the political instability has been terminated by the caucus vote outcome  , this whole event has damaged the Image of the labour party even if it was brought upon by external agencies and speculation on the part of the media

Questions raised by the political drama

  • Was this motivated by media agencies or corporations  who did not like the current government reforms ?
  • Was this done to destabilize the current government ?
  • Was there bigger powerbrokers orchestrating he whole drama behind the scenes?

Now what remains to be seen is if Labor party can come through and repeat a win like in the last elections, when Kevin Rudd was elected :0

US gun laws Now arms teachers

January 3, 2013 by Reporter Leave a Comment

The shooting massacre in the US town of Newtown – in which 27 people died, mostly little children aged just six and seven years old – has left America in mourning and has stressed the need for a national debate on gun control.

This horrible massacrehas brought the nation to a tipping point? Does the US government have the political courage to take a stand?

But what has happened since then, Alarmingly quite the opposite  and instead of stricter gun laws the  teachers are now arming themselves. The political powers in the US  are controlled by the rich backing the NRA and the politicians , putting the powers in a weak situation with no power.

The NRA and the ISRA and Guns Save Life and the Second Amendment Sisters and CORE and the new kid, Illinoiscarry.com, began to work together and coordinate their efforts more and more, but alas its all falling apart.

The New York Times has referred to Australia’s gun laws as a "road map" for the US, saying that "in the 18 years before the law, Australia suffered 13 mass shootings – but not one in the 14 years after the law took full effect."

Philip Alpers from the Sydney School of Public Health at the University of Sydney looks back at how Australia tightened its gun control laws in 1996, on the CNN website.

On the ABC’s Religion and Ethics portal, Michael Stafford says America seems to love its guns more than the lives of its citizens.

We must re-establish a clear link between gun violence in our society and public policy. Passing an updated, and stricter, version of the old Assault Weapons Ban (which also prohibited high capacity magazines), coupled with a vigorous voluntary buy-back program targeting existing lawfully-purchased assault weapons already in private hands, as well as legislation closing the Brady Act’s gun show loophole, are critical first steps.

At the same time, we should also enact legislation applying strict limitations on the number of guns that people are permitted to purchase at one time – no more than one gun every three months sounds like a reasonable limit to me – coupled with mandatory waiting periods of a meaningful duration after any purchase is made before an individual can actually pick up their new weapon.

A former head of Australia’s anti-gun coalition says US president Barack Obama should use his status as a two-term president to push gun reforms through Congress.

CBS News reports:

The Utah Shooting Sports Council said it would waive its $50 fee for concealed-weapons training for the teachers. Instruction featuring plastic guns was to start Thursday inside a conference room at Maverick Center, a hockey arena in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Valley.

In Ohio, the Buckeye Firearms Association said it was launching a test program in tactical firearms training for 24 teachers initially.

A gun store in Texas also announced last week that it would offer teachers a 10 percent discount for a concealed carry class.

It takes just one armed teacher to lose his or her cool and pull the trigger on a defiant student to open another unfortunate chapter

Are the wealthy taking over Australia ?

March 3, 2012 by Reporter Leave a Comment

Australia is losing its “fair go” culture  and is under threat  from a elite and rich group of wealthy business people – including Andrew forest, Gina Rinehart and Clive Palmer – who are using their riches  to undermine good Policy and threaten our democracy –says Treasurer Wayne Swan . Mr swan has steered most businesses in Australia through the GFC with much less impact  than has been felt throughout other economies.

wealthy oppose tax Mr wayne swan speech

Image Reference: The Monthly – Full Article

Mr Swan said Australians should be concerned  about the excessive and increasing power of vested interests  with power and wealth to back up their agenda to their own benefit.

This was evident  when major Mining companies said they were cutting down expansions and staff due to the Mining tax  and GFC and other factors, but soon as the Rudd led cabinet was shafted in favour of  Julia Gillard  they went ahead with their million dollar project expansions.

There was bitterness after the mineral  resource rent tax  and carbon price was introduced  with the purses of  the wealthy being hit. The big miners Invested millions of dollars in opposing  these taxes and policies by advertising in TV and print media  , saying it would hit the common man in Australia. It is unusual that this direct method was used by the wealthy corporations rather than politicians being influenced and lobbying being done which is often the case at times.

Mr swan has urged Politicians to cater to and look after the common mans benefit , and supporting the workers rather than succumbing to the lobbying of the wealthy  and  to give Australia  the sense of fairness and decency it deserves.

The government is said to be in the midst of considering a report on media law reform. This could be the result of Gina Rinehart  taking a large shareholding in The seven news media network , making her even more powerful which could be a cause for concern for many only not only  within the media industry but also outside  the media industry.

Radio , TV and Newspapers due to the power they wield have often have been claimed to support and make and break governments in other countries , deciding on who they decide to favour.

Mr swan goes on to write that  the mining campaigns brought out by the wealthy people against the tax damaged  the government , brought on instability and resulted in prime minister Mr Rudd being toppled. With this proposed Mining tax not going through, the government will be short of $110 Billion to use towards taxpayers benefit.

Mr swan said "It is the tiny 1 precent, or even 0.1 per cent (you know who they are) who are trying to drown out the others, who are blind to the national interest and pour their considerable personal fortune into advertising ,armies of lobbyist, dodgy modelling, and corporate and commercial manoeuvring designed to influence editorial decisions.

Un enforces No Fly zone – Who voted ?

March 20, 2011 by Reporter 1 Comment

A no-fly zone (or no-flight zone) is a territory over which aircraft are not permitted to fly. Such zones are usually set up in a military context, somewhat like a demilitarized zone in the sky, and usually prohibit military aircraft of a belligerent nation from operating in the region. – From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Un resolution goes yes  with NO FLY ZONE for Libya

Libya said late Saturday that it considered invalid a UN resolution on a no-fly zone over the country and demanded an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council after the air strikes by West powers.

The vote passed 10-0 with five abstentions in the 15 member council.

UN Security Council Resolution 1973 authorises the use of all means necessary to protect civilians, including air strikes, and the creation of a no-fly zone to prevent Moamer Kadhafi attacking rebels. Mr Rudd has been campaigning for a no-fly zone over Libya for several weeks and says Australia was “banging the drum” for quite a while.

Middle East Uprisings

The Libyan revolt is the bloodiest of popular uprisings in the Middle East this year that have toppled Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

There have also been anti-government demonstrations in Yemen, Bahrain, Jordan, Syria, Algeria, Iran, Iraq and Oman, calling for democracy and improved living standards.
