AusCERT is holding its annual conference from 28 to 31 May 2019 at the Surfers Paradise Marriott in the Gold Coast. AusCEPT is a leading Cyber Emergency Response Team CEPT information security advisor for different sectors.

Different organisations in Australia join the network and benefit from the response services of the team on different issues involving cybersecurity.

Both members and non-members can attend the conference, which has various elements making up the agenda. The first two days cover tutorials while the actual conference takes place on the last two days.

More About AusCERT

The Australian CERT was established in 1993 as a non-profit that is part of the University of Queensland in the Information Technology Services. AusCERT served as the national cyber emergency response team until 2010. It is one of the first contacts that organisations have when dealing with security incidents.

AusCERT was created to help members detect, respond, mitigate and prevent cyber-related attacks. The response funds itself through registration fees from members, service contracts and the annual conference.

AusCERT is responsible for monitoring threats and vulnerabilities on a global scale. It then develops strategies for mitigation and prevention of different types of risks. The team has numerous global contacts across the world that allows it to gather accurate information on emerging cyber threats. As part of global CERT, the cyber security Australia team gets early warnings about threats for which members benefit a lot.

The response team has an incident management service that is responsible for stopping a cyber attack in progress. Members can also rely on this service to help them recover after an incident. AusCERT has a Security Bulletin Service, which is a report containing data from varying sources about different internet security issues.

AusCERT 2019

Every year, AusCERT holds a cyber security conference that has remained the longest running in Australia. About 700 participants, both individuals and organisations, attend the event. The conference is designed to offer companies and internet security experts the tools they need to enhance their response to attacks.

From in-house IT teams to white hat hackers and other internet security experts, the 2019 conference provides an opportunity for industry players to interact and discuss issues like cyber security management. Social events are also part of the program including a Gala Dinner that incorporates industry awards. Participants have the chance to visit the Gold Coast and enjoy what it has in store.

The Agenda

On the first day of tutorials, participants will undertake a malware traffic analysis workshop, open source security orchestration, malware analysis, MISP training, TLS training, digital forensics and social engineering. For the second day of tutorials, attendees will learn how to think like an analyst, the risk management of cyber security, x86 assembly fundamentals, hacking of Bluetooth low energy, practical data science, TLS training and digital forensics. On 30 and 31 May, keynote speeches will take place.

The keynote speakers at the 2019 AusCERT cyber security conference are Mike Hypponen and Troy Hunt. Hypponen is a renowned TED Speaker on matters of tech security. He is also the CRO (Chief Research Officer) of F-Secure. Hypponen is an author for various global publications including Scientific America, The New York Times and Wired. Hunt is a Microsoft Regional Director and an independent security trainer. He founded HIBP (Have I Been Pwned) a data breach monitoring and notification service. Adam Spencer, a lover of math and a comedian, will be the event’s MC. Speakers for the main program and tutorials are from different global and regional companies.

AusCERT2019, organised by GEMS Event Management, will be a congregation of organisations from across the region looking to gain more knowledge about cybersecurity and its various facets. AusCERT provides information about the registration of members and non-members for the conference.

Man charged for stopping thief’s break into his house

March 16, 2011 by Reporter Leave a Comment

Glenn Gregory, 53, is fighting two charges of unlawful wounding in the Carnarvon District Court over the late night bungled home break-in on February 28 last year by Juveniles.

The gang of seven juvenile children , aged 12 to 15, targeted Mr Gregory’s home because he was then the local ice-cream man and they wanted to steal lollies, drinks and other items apparently.

Carnarvon_Jetty,_Western_Australia

Mr . Gregory’s  Story

Mr Gregory’s  said he was woken up by  the noise of someone ripping the flywire off his bedroom window. He told officers  that when he went outside to investigate in pitch-black conditions and saw several figures , he chased the figures around the side of his house.

He said he saw some of them crash into a pole and outdoor furniture and trip over a concrete step in their hasty escape attempt.

The alleged victims claims Mr Gregory hit them with an iron bar or pole-like object. The ringleader of the group, who is now 16 and a sentenced prisoner with more than a dozen burglary convictions, yesterday testified via video link. The teen said he and another cousin had broken into Mr Gregory’s shed to steal food and drinks from his ice-cream van earlier that night. He said the bigger group later returned and admitted he wanted to break into the house to steal further items.

Police found a metal pole jammed under Mr Gregory’s garage, which the 16-year-old juvenile admitted was used to try to wedge the door open during the burglary. The pole was ruled out as a possible weapon because Mr Gregory’s DNA was not on it.

Members  of the public has raised mixed comments on different forums  if Mr gregory  went to far in trying to stop the burglars or then was it just a case of well deserved justice for the juveniles?

Cop gets million dollar payout for being bashed while on duty

January 25, 2011 by Reporter 3 Comments

Perth constable Matthew Butcher has been awarded a record $3.3 million ex-gratia payment by the West Australian government to cover injuries sustained during a vicious pub brawl two years ago.

Perth Constable Butcher was left partially paralyzed from severe head injuries after he was struck with a flying head butt  when the cops were called to intervene during the fight ( between brawling family members) outside the pub.outside the Old Bailey Tavern in Perth’s northern suburb of Joondalup in February 2008.

The head butt left Constable Butcher unconscious and he  was put into an induced coma. He spent several months in hospital undergoing a slow and painful rehabilitation.  Constable  Butcher continued  to work with the  WA Police in an administrative role  and also lodged a claim with the WA Police Union for compensation of $5 million for various medical expenses.

Some mixed sentiments  & comments on this story From watoday & news.com.au

Would a construction worker receive such a payment if injured in thier line of work? Not on your nelly, they have laws and contracts to prevent such payments. So why should the Police be any different? Setting the Police up as separate from the rest of society is dangerous and open for abuse. –Harry (Brisbane)

His dad was being tazered, an over reaction for sure, but not entirely unpredictable. When a family member is attacked, no matter what, your bound to react in some crazy way.
3.3 million, easy street now. Bozo

From what I see in the video, the Police very poorly handled the situation. The man who was tasered was not threatening anyone’s life, and it appears the other family member jumped on the cop to try to save his own father. It did not appear that he intended to cause the officer serious harm, just wanted to save his own father from further harm. Which is probably why he was properly found not guilty. If the cops had handled the situation better, Mr. Butcher probably wouldn’t have been injured the way he was….not that I think it’s his fault, and I do believe he deserved some compo. It looked to be nothing more than a pushing and shoving match and from what I can see, there was no need to start tasering anyone, because at that point no one’s life was in danger.-meinsydney

This cop is a parasite.

If you don’t want to break up fights then don’t become a bloody police officer! So he has to catch taxis now and is most concerned about not ageing gracefully?  Pass the bucket please.-battler

I totally support your point of view. The compensation for the miitary is a tiny fraction of this award. It is a State political decision rather than on merit. And I agree the compensation for military personnel sucks. In all cases this award is way over what is reasonable, The guy has a full wage and is at least 80% moblle. Compare that to the diggers who have lost their legs and arms to IEDs – let alone the brain injuries. They get almost nothing.

This award is an insult to military personnel, Reserve and Full-time. –Jerry

I remember seeing the video of this, it was a despicable thing to do to this officer, the culprit should be ashamed of himself & I cannot understand why he got off? God luck to this officer & his wife, blessings for you both and a happy healthy child! – Waylander (posted on news.com.au)
