Assange Arrest– Has british police broken International Law.

August 16, 2012 by Reporter 2 Comments

The Australian JULIAN ASSANGE , wanted by British authorities for breaching bail conditions after a court ordered his extradition to Sweden, is just hours from learning if Ecuador will protect him. If not, he faces being ejected from the embassy into the arms of police.

julian assange protests arrests london

WikiLeaks tweeted this morning that police in two large vans had arrived ‘‘to surround the Ecuadorian embassy in London’’ about midnight, local time.

The Ecuadorian government will announce it decision on Assange’s bid at 10pm today(AEST).

Two Metropolitan Police vans have parked directly outside the entrance of the Ecuador embassy in the west London building.  Several police vans are outside the embassy, police have been seen entering through a side door and uniformed officers are standing guard at the front entrance.

According to an Australian law expert., Any incursion by the British at the embassy would be ‘‘without modern precedent’’ and could end up before the international courts.

"The Ecuadorian embassy enjoys protection under Article 22 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations which precludes the United Kingdom authorities from entering the embassy without consent.

"If the United Kingdom revoked the Embassy’s diplomatic protection and entered the Embassy to arrest Assange, Ecuador could rightly view this as a significant violation of international law which may find its way before an international court.”

Mr Patino told a news conference that Ecuador had received a written threat on Wednesday from Britain that "it could assault our embassy" if Assange was nothanded over.

Why would UK take this extreme step ( with possible international law beingbroken)

Some possible reasons

  • Pressure from Other countries( mainly US and Sweden) to get Assange extradited
  • UK Considers Ecuador a small and powerless country with low risk in  taking this bold step for this reasons.
  • Poor decision making process by some London authorities.

This increasingly it seems as a a matter between Ecuador and the United Kingdom” though it could have international conseqences

Police have clashed with a Huge protests at the Ecuadorian embassy in London as tension mounts over WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s bid for political asylum. Media Commentators have said that US is putting pressure on other governments to  make the extradition of  Julian assange to  Sweden and then the US successful.

A "citizen journalist" with the twitter account https://twitter.com/alburyj, was streaming the ongoing activity at the site  , but the feed has since stopped.

Australian Employment Rate Steady for last eight months

August 11, 2011 by Reporter Leave a Comment

After having  the Employment rate at a healthy   rate for the last eight months, the  Unemployment rate has reached a high in July. The rise in the unemployment  rate has been just 5.1 percent in July from 4.9 percent a month earlier.

The ABS monthly aggregate hours worked series showed an increase in July, up 3.6 million hours to 1,621.4 million hours.

The number of workers fell by 100 after a revised 18,200 gain in June. According to reports even though there was a reduction in full time jobs , it was compensated by a rise in part time jobs.

While the retail sector in Australia has been showing a downtrend  the mining sector is still booming with more jobs  available as the projects get in motion.

“The increase in resources exports will boost GDP outcomes over coming quarters, although the rebound is likely to be more protracted than previously expected,” the RBA said last week in its quarterly monetary policy statement. Australia’s third-largest oil producer, and BG Group Plc, the U.K.’s third-biggest gas producer, will start hiring the first of more than 10,000 construction workers needed for this massive  two projects later this year

The ABS reported the number of people employed remained relatively unchanged at 11,450,500 in July. A decrease in full-time employment, down 22,200 people was offset by an increase in part-time employment, up 22,100 people.

Handl, 31,  ran a blog  and said he had tried for months to set up a nuclear reactor at home and kept a blog about his experiments, describing how he created a small meltdown on his stove.

Handl said “I have always been interested in physics and chemistry,” and said he wanted to know if he could split atoms at home.

Handl’s blog — still available at richardsreactor.blogspot.com — describes his efforts in detail

Another Qantas Incident on Perth to London flight

July 31, 2011 by Reporter 1 Comment

31 July 2011: Qantas had another incident today  on its Perth to London flight that left  Perth on July 30 .  we just got informed by a passenger who was travelling on the flight that the Qantas flight midway between Singapore and London  suddenly started descending rapidly mid –air and swaying side to side.

The  pilot announced that there was turbulence later.  She said she felt as if the aircraft had lost control as it was swaying wildly  and descended rapidly for some time.

Qantas has been hit by a string of problems   in recent years

ground-qantas - problem

Quote passenger from the Perth to London flight on qantas

“They said it was turbulence but it was quite bad turbulence and am not sure the pilot handled it well cos the landing was bad too. About 3 hours after take off from Singapore, the flight suddenly started to shake and sway from side to side and lose altitude and the crew ran to their stations. Lunch trays fell off the tables and people were clutching their seats, the girl in front of me started feeing pukey. This went on for about 5 minutes and then there was an announcement saying it was turbulence and will last for 15 minutes, which made me relieved that it wasn’t engine problems. Incidentally this aircraft was delayed by 2 hours from taking off from its starting point, Melbourne so I guess this got us all even more panicky. But yes, thank God we ere all safe.”

This incident that occurred today  sounds quite similar to this previous incident  which has occured before with a Qantas flight.  More detailed information to follow soon…..

Research demonstrates that one of the main reasons Australians buy online from overseas-based sellers is due to many popular products not being offered online locally.Turnover for the top 2,000 Australian businesses on eBay.com.au grew by 38 per cent in 2010, clearly demonstrating that consumers have a robust appetite for domestic goods and for purchasing online.

Coles recently has also started  a service  making groceries available at a click of a button.  You can buy Groceries online and you can just drive in to the Coles  stores and staff will drop your online grocery shopping  goods into your car  ready for you to just drive home. Dicksmith  electronics which can be browsed at  www.dse.com.au has got a convenient click and collect new buying method for customers , the customers can reserve a product online without payment and then pay and collect the product in store.

More details on how this buying method for Dicksmith online works  is here on their website

David Jones launched its online retailing website in November 2010 as a record high Australian dollar was enticing local consumers onto overseas websites.

The four-year-old study has found that while 82% of global retailers have some form of online catalogue , Australia has only 75% of  its retailers having a online catalogue. The countries with the highest proportion of retailers that can deliver goods bought online were the UK (at 44%), the US (39%) and France (38%).

Man charged for stopping thief’s break into his house

March 16, 2011 by Reporter Leave a Comment

Glenn Gregory, 53, is fighting two charges of unlawful wounding in the Carnarvon District Court over the late night bungled home break-in on February 28 last year by Juveniles.

The gang of seven juvenile children , aged 12 to 15, targeted Mr Gregory’s home because he was then the local ice-cream man and they wanted to steal lollies, drinks and other items apparently.

Carnarvon_Jetty,_Western_Australia

Mr . Gregory’s  Story

Mr Gregory’s  said he was woken up by  the noise of someone ripping the flywire off his bedroom window. He told officers  that when he went outside to investigate in pitch-black conditions and saw several figures , he chased the figures around the side of his house.

He said he saw some of them crash into a pole and outdoor furniture and trip over a concrete step in their hasty escape attempt.

The alleged victims claims Mr Gregory hit them with an iron bar or pole-like object. The ringleader of the group, who is now 16 and a sentenced prisoner with more than a dozen burglary convictions, yesterday testified via video link. The teen said he and another cousin had broken into Mr Gregory’s shed to steal food and drinks from his ice-cream van earlier that night. He said the bigger group later returned and admitted he wanted to break into the house to steal further items.

Police found a metal pole jammed under Mr Gregory’s garage, which the 16-year-old juvenile admitted was used to try to wedge the door open during the burglary. The pole was ruled out as a possible weapon because Mr Gregory’s DNA was not on it.

Members  of the public has raised mixed comments on different forums  if Mr gregory  went to far in trying to stop the burglars or then was it just a case of well deserved justice for the juveniles?

Australian Insurance under scrutiny due to floods

January 18, 2011 by Reporter 2 Comments

With massive floods  damaging large parts of Queensland and  currently in Victoria ,  the insurance companies   are surely going to come  under more scrutiny  than any other corporate sector  due  wide damage done to houses and businesses in Australia due to the floods.

The floods  will not only  leave many of the people with nothing much to hang on too ( specially those who are not covered) , but will also deliver a massive  blowout to the insurance companies  and their profits as well.

So, Are you covered for  floods  ? what are the different type of food Insurance  covers ?

Irrespective of the damage that has wrecked many households , the insurance companies are here to run a business , and run it profitably, so they are not going to pay out claims if it is not covered out of good generosity. In fact many will be willing to argue that  they will not cover  floods even if   the insurance cover is a sort of a grey area ( like different type  of floods  Insurance covers).

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Australian-Floods-Disaster-2011

Riverine or inland floods

Consumer group Choice examined 45 insurance policies available nationwide and found only 13 – about 30 per cent – cover riverine or inland floods, or the swelling of river and creek banks, problems commonly seen as rains battered Queensland. Riverine flooding is caused by rivers and creeks swelling “due to long duration rainfall over large catchment area.

What is my flood cover with insurance company ?

Because flood cover is not offered in most house and contents insurance policies, people may find out too late that they are not covered for the losses caused by a flood. Floods occur when rivers; creeks; lakes; dams; reservoirs; and other natural watercourses (even if modified by humans) burst their banks or overflow.

However your policy will probably cover you for stormwater and possibly rainwater damage. Insurance companies generally define these events differently.

Different type of flood covers

  • storm water damage occurs when the storm makes an opening in the roof or walls and lets water in; and
  • rain water damage occurs when the rain gets into your building because it cannot drain off the land any other way; and
  • flood damage occurs when rivers, dams, lakes and natural watercourses (even if they are often dry) overflow.

You should check with your insurance company if you are unsure whether your existing policy covers damage caused by storm and/or flood. Ask them to clearly explain that part of your policy where flood cover, or flood exclusion, is contained. This will allow you to work out whether to change your policy if you need insurance for flood damage.

Of the three types of flooding, the type most commonly covered is flash flooding or storm water flooding, according to the Insurance Council.

It has become common for some insurers to provide cover against ‘ flash flooding’ which is a more popular insurance that the insurance companies have sold recently. This occurs  when the damage to your property occurs within 24 hours of the rain that caused the flood. This cover may be optional (you have to pay more, and it may only cover you for a smaller amount eg 20% of the sum insured).

Deciding whether you need flood cover ?

Flooding may occur only rarely, say once ever 50 or 100 years, and reliable facts can be hard to come by. Here are some likely sources of information:

  • your Council may be able to tell you straight away if you live in a flood prone area. (Even if the Council cannot answer this question directly, Council staff or elected members of the Council may at least be able to tell you if flooding has occurred in the area.);
  • the local water authority
  • local newspapers;
  • local solicitors or conveyancers who handle property matters;
  • insurance companies who do business in the area;
  • local insurance brokers; and

Insist on getting the policy in writing before you buy, because you need time to understand and compare the wording of different policies to make sure you get the right protection. Its is best not  to  buy flood insurance over the phone without reading the policy first.

The Queensland floods may cost insurers and reinsurers worldwide as much as $6 billion in what might be Australia’s costliest disaster in history, Bloomberg has reported  and it is still growing.

Coal prices set to soar with australian and african floods and rains

January 7, 2011 by Reporter Leave a Comment

Coal Flooding News: As the australian floods  and devastation news in the eastern states hits the world news all over , another  event  in africa is adding to the pain of coal importing countries. To add to the coal export worries in australia, now africa  us having heavy rains impairing thier  coal exports as well.

This chain of event can mean only one thing  higher coal prices  due to this shortage in coal in australia and africa  which are one of teh bigger coal exporting countries. China and INDIA  which  have substantial coal imports from these countries will certainly be affected , even though china has its own coal producing mines.

africa coal exports australia

Three big coal miners BHP Billiton Ltd., Xstrata Plc and Anglo American Plc, already facing delays in coal shipments from flooding in Australia, said their South African operations are also being hit by unusually high rainfall.

South Africa  Heavy rains effect coal exports

South Africa raised the flood-warning level for its central Orange River area today as water levels in places were expected to reach the highest since 1996. The country’s biggest dam, Gariepdam, is at 113 percent of “full” levels and the second- biggest, Vanderkloof, is 107 percent full, according to figures on the website of the government’s water department.

Coal for delivery to Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Antwerp with settlement next year rose $2.85, or 2.4 percent, to $119.75 a metric ton at 12:28 p.m. in London. Prices rose as high as $120 earlier yesterday.

Australia Flooding effects coal exports

One of Queensland’s largest coal terminals has stopped exports and the largest in the state is at just 60 per cent capacity, ripping nearly two million tonnes of coal a week from the global supply. About 40 mines in Queensland have been affected by flooding and several have said they cannot meet their contracts.

Australia’s coal exports will probably take a few months to recover after the floods, Barclays Capital said in a report. That means further upward pressure on prices in the near term, Barclays analyst Yingxi Yu said in a report e-mailed today.

Australia “Jeans ad ban” creates news over the world

October 23, 2010 by Reporter Leave a Comment

Authorities have “banned” supermodel Lara Stone’s latest Calvin Klein advertisement in Australia,

alleging that the photographs promoted “violence and rape”. A leading Australian feminist on Friday slammed the Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) for banning a billboard advertising campaign for Calvin Klein jeans it considered “suggestive of violence and rape”.

calvin klein australian ad jeans ban

The Dutch beauty is pictured in her underwear lying among a group of men,

with one male model straddling her suggestively while the other pulling her hair.
After receiving complaints, officials at the country’s Advertising Standards Bureau branded the ads “demeaning to women” and ruled the campaign must be scrapped, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Melbourne University lecturer Lauren Rosewarne told national broadcaster ABC that the ASB was

wrongly equating group sex with gang rape.

“The board considered that whilst the act depicted could be consensual, the overall impact and most likely takeout is that the scene is suggestive of violence and rape,” the organisation said in a statement.

The hoardings, which were taken down in Sydney and Melbourne after more than 50 complaints, depict model Lara Stone, the Dutch-born wife of British comedian David Walliams, without most of her clothes and being wrestled by near-naked men.
