The girl that changed the Melbourne cup in 2015

November 3, 2015 by Reporter Leave a Comment

michelle payne first australian femal jockey to win melbourne cupGirl jockeys are not many but Michelle Payne riding the winner Prince of Penzance for the Melbourne cup 2015 proved all the punters wrong and went like a lightning bolt past the other jockeys today  to win the Emirates Melbourne cup 2015.

“It’s like a dream come true, this horse is awesome,” Payne said after the race.

It’s a new era for female jockeys and this will surely encourage many more female jockeys to get into this sport.

Michelle Payne has become the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, riding outsider Prince Of Penzance to victory at Flemington.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Australia Pam O’Neill and Linda Jones, in 1979, were the pioneers that forced jockey club officials to grant women the right to compete on an equal footing in registered races against men. They were unquestionably the first women jockeys to be licensed to ride in the metropolitan areas of Australia. Previously women had been riding against men in Australia at the unregistered “all-height” meetings. Pam created a world record for any jockey, male or female, when she rode a treble at Southport on her first day’s riding. Australia’s top woman jockey, Bev Buckingham, became the first woman in the Southern Hemisphere to win 1,000 races.

Another female jockey Anna Rose “Rosie” Napravnik (born February 9, 1988) is an American Thoroughbred horse racing jockey and two-time winner of the Kentucky Oaks.
